Pharmacy Technician BASICS
This credential documents development of knowledge and skills related to the procedures used in assisting the pharmacist in preparing mediation orders and managing the various aspects of the pharmacy practice under the supervision of a pharmacist. Specifically, this badge demonstrates the earner's fundamental understanding of pharmacy operations, purpose and the overall pharmacy profession.
Pharmacy Technician Review

The need for Pharmacy Technicians continues to grow with demand expected to increase substantially through 2024. Technicians work under the supervision of a registered pharmacist in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies and other healthcare settings. This high demand for pharmacy technicians is the result of a multitude of factors including the constant availability of new drugs, the national shortage of registered pharmacists, the establishment of certified pharmacy technicians, and the aging population. Approximately 400,000 technicians will be employed by the year 2024 to meet our nation’s growing healthcare demands.

This comprehensive course will prepare learners to enter the pharmacy field and take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam. Content includes pharmacy terminology, reading and interpreting prescriptions, defining generic and brand names drugs, and much, much more.  This program will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and to pursue certification including the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam.

 

Program Objectives

After completing this program, learners will be able to:

  • Define the difference between retail and hospital pharmacy settings
  • Demonstrate ethical conduct in all duties performed
  • Explain the laws that govern pharmacy, whether federal or state mandated
  • Interpret physician orders and prescriptions
  • Prepare and explain the administration of medications
  • Define medical and pharmaceutical terms and common abbreviations
  • Explain the pharmacology of medications in relation to the anatomy affected
  • Perform pharmaceutical calculations

Pharmacy Technician Externship
PURPOSE
This Externship badge documents the acquisition of practical skills and experience necessary for pharmacy technicians working in the community pharmacy setting or the hospital pharmacy setting including pharmacy practice administration, pharmacy law and ethics, inventory management, and pharmacy insurance billing, performing calculations required for filling prescriptions, compounding, preparation of sterile products, and understanding pharmacology and dosage formulations related to each body system in order to ensure patient health and safety.

AUDIENCE
This credential is appropriate for pharmacy technicians working in both the community pharmacy setting and the hospital pharmacy setting.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN WORKPLACE TASKS:
The Externship badge confirms the earner's continued and successful practice of the following tasks demonstrating their ability to:
  • Correctly use pharmacy terminology and abbreviations to communicate with others in a variety of channels 
  • Demonstrate an understanding of various drug classifications  
  • Be professional at all times demonstrating the required characteristics for the successful pharmacy worker 
  • Apply the policies and procedures of ambulatory pharmacy practice settings  
  • Apply the policies and procedures of the health-service pharmacy practice setting  
  • Ensure compliance with pharmacy laws and ethical principles  
  • Apply inventory control and management procedures in the pharmacy setting
